IT HAD TAKEN ONLY A matter of minutes for Josie to get the fire going. After kicking herself for forgetting the firelighters, she improvised, scouting around the campsite for dried grass and shredding the cardboard from our four-pack of Thatchers into strips. She managed to get the makeshift kindling and twigs alight, and it wasn’t long before the logs from the shed were burning too. There were at least five other couples sat around their fires, and I had to give it Josie, ours was burning the brightest in our beautiful setting with the stream burbling close by. I left the camping chair then, moved to the fire pit and parked my bum on one of the strategically placed logs. After some fine-tuning and extra prodding of the fire-bowl, Josie joined me, positioning herself between my legs on the grass. I wrapped my arms around her shoulders and leaned my chin on her head as we both sat hypnotised by the flickering flames.

“This is nice.” My voice was low and in keeping with the mellow atmosphere. I was already feeling the cleansing effect of the fresh air and scented wood smoke on my skin. Josie tilted her head up to look at me.

“I told you it was what you needed. I read a study the other day that said people who get out in Nature are on average three times happier than those who never leave the city.”

I let out a low chuckle and kissed her head again, knowing precisely what she meant. Being away from it all, hearing nothing but the crackling of the burning wood, the birds and the splash and gurgle from the stream while breathing the cool, clean air into my lungs, really did feel like the perfect recipe for happy. I withdrew my hands to her shoulders and began to gently press my thumbs into the muscles.

“So, if I’d been unable to make this trip, you would have come alone?”

Josie relaxed back against me and let out a moan, “Umm, that feels good.” Her voice was low and hoarse, causing me to momentarily forget what I had asked through my instant arousal. “That was the plan. I try to get away at least once every year, preferably twice. It helps me get some perspective and gives me time to clear my head.”

I stayed quiet and continued massaging her. She seemed at ease, and I figured it would be a good opportunity to ask her about her dad.

“So, did your dad take you camping?” I continued to rhythmically press my thumbs into her, but instantly her shoulders tensed, and after a few moments she leaned forward and picked up a stick from the pile she’d gathered. She sat back between my
